More detailed information about what we do and the pests we're dealing with is given below

Many insects pose a serious threat to health and business activity (further information about insects), as well as causing stress and worry to people faced with infestations.

They can be controlled by using insecticides, in the form of sprays, dusts or gels, depending on your situation. We will tailor the treatment to suit your needs. For example, dusts are used where there are lots of electrical plug sockets around. We also feel it is of utmost importance to consider the biology of the pest species involved when devising a treatment.

Some infestations may require several visits; we use the first visit to survey the problem, carrying out the initial treatment and placing detection devices (monitors).  On subsequent visits, we inspect the monitors, track down pockets of infestation and then carry out more intensive treatments of hiding places.

Some of the insecticides we use are residual i.e. they continue to work for several days or weeks, killing any insects that come into contact with it during this time. If we use such an insecticide on your property, you will be informed of how to maximize its potential during this active period e.g. limiting harsh cleaning of the areas treated.

Many insects have developed resistance to a variety of insecticides.  It is therefore important to keep up to date with the latest developments and chemicals in pest control and to have fully trained staff carrying out treatments. Our biologists monitor the progress of our infestation control measures to prevent this possibility arising.

Some insects, such as Pharaoh's ants and bed-bugs require special treatment. The technician will be happy to discuss the treatment with you at the time; alternatively, our fully qualified biologists are able to inform you over the telephone before or after treatment, or face-to-face on site during a biologist’s visit if it is a particularly bad infestation.

Under the Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (COSHH), non-chemical methods of control must be identified and used before chemical intervention. This is why we always provide proofing, hygiene and housekeeping advice where necessary. Success depends upon teamwork and we may ask you to help by changing cleaning practices and carrying out repairs to the building.

We also suggest electronic fly killers as an effective non-chemical method of controlling flying insects. We can supply these, and service them regularly once installed; however, we do recommend that you employ the services of a qualified electrician to install these.

The Microbee technician always writes a report at the end of the visit to advise the client on how the situation is progressing and gives detailed instructions on what housekeeping and hygiene measures need to be taken.

Special treatments

Pharoah’s ant treatment

Microbee controls the ants using a sealed tamper resistant bait station. These contain a juvenile hormone analogue called Hydramethylnon. The natural form of this chemical controls growth in insects. Its effect on Pharaoh's ants is to make the queen lay sterile eggs. By the time the workers notice, it is too late for them to produce new queens from the eggs since they too will be sterile. Gradually the worker population dies out and towards the end of a treatment, the queens themselves can sometimes be seen feeding on the baits. The workers can live for ten weeks and the queens for up to thirty-nine weeks.

The treatment starts with an intensive baiting of the entire building, since their nests may be spread throughout. This is repeated fourteen days later to make sure that the ants have as much of the bait as they can take.

It is important that conventional insecticides are not used in this period since we want as much of the bait to be carried back to the queen as possible. If someone uses a spray it could cause a colony to "bud" and move to a new area away from the poison bait.

If some of the workers are killed then they cannot transport enough of the poison back to the nest. The queen may still be producing viable eggs.

The baiting process may be repeated again two weeks later or conventional pesticide sprays may be used to control any surviving workers.

The baits are very expensive. It also takes some time to place and monitor them which makes treatment an expensive business. If areas or flats are left untreated, the treatment could fail because the ants could re-colonise areas previously cleared. For this reason, it is vital that all areas can be treated on every visit. Those who fail to co-operate in providing access could jeopardise the success of the treatment and the health of the other occupants.

Treatment dates are usually notified well in advance so access to all areas of a building can be obtained.

Bed-bug treatment

The entire area is inspected thoroughly: any infested bedding, the mattress, headboard and any nearby furniture may have to be burnt if the insecticide cannot penetrate deeply enough to kill all the bed-bugs. Our technician will advise exactly which items are salvageable and which must be disposed of, and how to prevent the infestation spreading to other people or other parts of your house via your clothes.

A thorough ‘crack and crevice’ spray is carried out with a strong insecticide, specially formulated for use on bed-bug infestations.

Health and Safety Note:

One of the major reasons for carrying out pest control work is to exclude or eliminate potential vectors of disease from within commercial properties. Technicians carrying out such work will inevitably come into close contact with these pests and the diseases they carry.

The Microbee technicians are made fully aware of these risks. They are also aware of the precautions that are required, i.e. personal protective clothing, which includes overalls, gloves, boots, hard hats, face masks and hair nets to protect them from the hazards and risks posed by the active presence of disease, vectors and pests within the premises.

The technician’s report will advise the about which chemicals and other materials were used, and what they should do to prevent the chemicals affecting themselves or other people in the building.
